And you roll it around in your mouth a little, let it get all melty, experience the taste as fully as possible. You try to eat the rest of it- the bar, the bag of chocolate chips, those little Dove eggs- slowly, and for a while it works. But eventually the lure of the sugar and cocoa is too strong. Realization hits, followed shortly by contentment, followed even more closely by a wish that there was more and a knowledge that there is not and so you must enjoy what you had.

The interest surrounding this book varies depending on the reader. Alexandra Bracken creates a universe in the first novel of her series that is truly immersive.
Taking place in a future where a considerable portion of the younger generation have been infected and seemingly eradicated by a disease, the story focuses on the survivors, children with special abilities that adults do not understand. Scared and uncertain of their futures, these children are locked away in camps where they are condemned to a life reflective of the typical prison. The story is tinged with many dark and gloomy elements, the author representing the struggles of the kids in as heartbreaking a manner as possible.
Remaining strong despite all that she has suffered, she has strived to maintain her sanity, determined to understand what happened to her parents. Along with Liam, she heads a cast of unique individuals trying to find a place of safety in a world that is a little too dark. However, she must learn to call upon them every day, heading difficult missions to bring a corrupt government to its knees.
Setting out across a lawless country to find Liam and the answers to the catastrophe that destroyed her life, Ruby will find herself torn between her old friends and her duty to the league. Will she strive to protect her loved ones if winning the war means losing herself?
